 Friends!

Anweshi has been a very important chapter in the history of women’s movements in Kerala.  The organization was formed in 1993 by a group of activists in response to the growing situation of violence against women in Kerala, due to the menace of dowry, liquor addiction, consumerist culture and what not. Eventually, Anweshi branched out into different fields like counseling, legal aid, community work, short stay home for women, adolescent programmes, legal literacy programmes, seminars, advocacy workshops; and more importantly it has accomplished one of the biggest feminist libraries for women in Kerala.

Anweshi’s success both as a centre for women and as a mouthpiece of women’s rights and social justice is the result of an incessant commitment of its team to work unitedly for transformation of man-woman relationships in the family and society at large in a democratic manner. Our reach has extended from originally the Kozhikode district to the other five districts of Malabar, namely Malappuram, Wayanad, Kannur, Kasargode and Palakkad.  We are grateful that with the valuable assistance from friends and funding agencies like the UN Population Fund & Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, Mumbai, we could transform Anweshi into an institution with a dedicated and experienced staff of twenty-five consisting of experts and activists.

Anweshi’s short stay home has been operating since the year 2003 and has given shelter to more than 400 women and children at the time of crisis. As the inmates are housed in a rented place it becomes very difficult during periods when there is no fund.  Moreover, Anweshi’s inmates are provided free food, shelter and even medication. As changing places periodically becomes very difficult, a permanent place for a short stay home will help us a lot in providing temporary shelter.

We sincerely request our friends and well wishers who believe in our work to help us in having an owned space for Short Stay Home.

We are confident of delivering positive results with adequate support from our enthusiastic supporters.
