ABHAYAM-An event to support Anweshi Short stay Home

Abhayam– which means shelter, was an initiative by Anweshi to raise funds for the construction of our Short Stay Home. The event which was held at Hotel Paramount Tower, Kozhikode on the 22nd of March, 2014 was suggested by Mr. Mammootty, one of the superstars of Malayalam cinema to express his solidarity with the cause.  Some of the other celebrities who had lent their support were the celebrated writer as well as Jnanpith and Padma Bhushan awardee Shri M. T. Vasudevan Nair and actress Mamta Mohandas. The fundraising event was organized in the backdrop of problems like increasing rent, lack of accessibility, unavailability of appropriate building, problems due to shifting etc. Hence it was extremely important to have a permanent space so as to have security and stability in providing shelter services to women and children.

Mammootty who inaugurated the function expressed his concern on the success of the cause. He shared that since the event involved participation from high society groups for its success, there were apprehensions about Anweshi’s ability to raise funds through this program especially because Anweshi has always associated itself with the grass-root level people. For the same reason he had even asked us if the responsibility be given to any external agency which Anweshi denied.  However he was happy to find a very good turnout for the Event which essentially reflected a common awareness on the need to respond to the prevalent discrimination against women and fight for their justice.

The speech was followed by some encouraging words by cine actress Mamtha Mohandas. She shared that women should fight for their rights and for self-respect.  Women should create their boundaries so that no man can enter their lives without their will. Once the woman is able to determine  and take charge of her life she can stop all kinds of discrmination.  Only such woman will be able to give birth to a courageous and brave new generation.

Shri M. T. Vasudevan Nair, a veteran in his field has always extended his support to Anweshi’s activities presided over the event. He expressed his deep concern over the discrimination against women and children by citing an example of how brutally a seven year old girl child was killed by her father and step-mother in Calicut city itself. Even the neighbors or her teachers did not notice any sign and were unable to stop the incident. We are currently living in a society where people are not aware of what is happening around them. People are increasingly becoming isolated. He added that in this context Anweshi’s work is extremely important and shared that his good wishes are always with Anweshi.

Smt. Ajitha who concluded the session added that women who approach Anweshi are many a times at the brink of suicide. Women who have nowhere to go are given admissions at Anweshi’s short stay home where in they are provided with other support like free legal aid and medical support. We have been able to give many women their lives back through our constant efforts. The Event has been organized to help such women and to give them long term rehabilitation.

The event concluded with a musical treat by Thej Orchestra and dinner to participants.
