THE AUDIENCE AT THE EVENT

SONG BY ANWESHI STAFF

The program commenced with a group song by Anweshi’s staff members. The song which highlighted environmental degradation was well-received by the audience and praised by Ms Medha Patkar who was reminded of her struggles.

It was followed by a welcome speech by Ms Sreeja P., secretary of Anweshi who also warmly greeted the guests.

Smt. Medha Patkar who was one of the first persons to speak, pointed out that Anweshi has been an important chapter in the women’s movement. She particularly admired the way Anweshi worked as a collective and that our services to women especially counseling was an excellent tool to change the mindset of a society. Moreover the fact that many men attended Anweshi’s celebration proved the quality of our work. She criticized the 33% reservation of women terming as baseless especially when women constitute 50% the population. In today’s world the concept of “for the women”, “by the women” and ‘of the women’ is extremely difficult. She added that women have the right to live with dignity and not just survive. Highlighting Smt. Ajitha and our team’s support to the Narmada Bhachao Andolan and other National level environmental struggles, she informed that she and her team respected Anweshi’s support to humanism. She concluded her speech with some touching slogans like “Jab Jab Behna Ladti Hai, Anyay ki Neev Dhasti hai” (Whenever women fight, the foundation of injustice weakens)Sri M. T Vasudevan Nair shared that in today’s world, the existence of an organization like Anweshi is integral. He added that surviving and rising above unfavorable circumstances is indeed not a small thing. Since ancient times, women have been struggling for their rights and existence. He particularly pointed out that Dashrath Maharaja also had a daughter named Shanta, a fact which is still unknown to many.

Smt. K. Ajitha, president of Anweshi presided over the function and shared with the audience that completing 20 years was not easy. She quickly reflected on its struggles and achievements.  Other guests also praised Anweshi’s work and its efforts in fighting for the justice of women.

The above speeches were followed by some cultural programs by women and Anweshi Balavedi members. The program came to an end with a vote of thanks by Ms. Prameela, Adolescent co-ordinator of Anweshi.

The program achieved its goal of sharing our joy and happiness with people as well as bringing together the well-wishers, supporters and the public to share our experiences and commitment. The guests gave a very positive impact about Anweshi’s work which was indeed an encouragement.
